Moyle Returns to Racing

Following the devastating accident at Winton during the closing stages of the 944 Challenge in 2008, Ben has fully recovered and is set to make a return to racing at the very same venue this coming weekend – August 29 & 30. Ben said, “well you fall off the horse, you get right back on……” and that is, despite the time, exactly what is proposed for this coming weekend.

The #62 car, extensively damaged in the Winton collision, has been restored to an “as new” racing car with the care and expertise of Rod Smith Racing. Ben, when seeing the vehicle for the first time following the accident, had commented that the damage was “far more than I ever thought likely…”. In fact that was an understatement given that virtually the entire front end has been replaced. Such is the result of a high speed front impact as experienced by Ben and a credit to the skills of the entire team to bring #62 back to life.

Ben is keen to get the gremlins behind him in what has been a real "baptism by fire" in his rookie year of 944 racing. The time off has been well spent focussing on the remainder of the year and Ben is determined to get right back into it.

As a final comment, Ben would like to place on record his sincere appreciation for all the people who have helped him since and during the accident, particularly the Winton Raceway team, Victorian Ambulance both road and Air, the staff at the Austin Hospital, members of the 944 Association and Rod Smith and his colleagues.

Positive Switch

Moyle makes gains in debut Porsche 944 round at Sandown

PROMISING youngster Ben Moyle recently joined the Porsche 944 ranks after making the switch from open wheeler racing in Formula Vee.

Moyle did enter the Phillip Island round, but blew an engine in Friday practice so he came to Sandown Raceway with close to no experience in the car.

"We had one test day to acclimatise ourselves with the car before we went to Phillip Island, but unfortunately we blew the engine," Moyle said.

"And then in the opening race at Sandown I had no-where to go as someone spun right in front of me, so it wasn’t the best of starts. "But we had a great run after that incident and made it into the top 10 which was above our expectations for the weekend."

Moyle has raced on the circuits before in Formula Vee, but racing an open wheeler and a sedan is a big difference and the racing lines are completely different. "It is completely different having a roof over your head and you can be a little bit more daring when it comes to overtaking as if you touch you don’t have to worry about ripping corners off the car," Moyle said.

As far as his season goals go Moyle looks on improving his pace in the 944 and getting a better understanding of the mechanics of the car and set-up as well.

"We have joined towards the end of the season so there is nothing we can aim for in terms of the championship, but are aiming to improve our set-up and pace throughout the last few rounds putting us in a good position for next year."
